Overview

Superhero movies have become increasingly popular within the last decade, with viewers flocking to the cinema to witness their favourite heroes fight villains and save the world. But what genre do these films fit into? Are they Science Fiction or Fantasy? This article will discuss the differences between the two genres, analyse the characteristics of superhero movies, and shed light on this important debate.

Science Fiction

By definition, Science Fiction is a genre dealing with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, alternative universes and extra-terrestrial life. According to these criteria, some superhero movies may indeed be classified as Science Fiction. Marvel’s Iron Man franchise, for instance, follows the adventures of billionaire inventor Tony Stark as he employs advanced technology such as artificial intelligence to protect the world. Furthermore, the Guardians of the Galaxy series centres around a group of intergalactic heroes who use space travel and high-tech gear to save the universe.

Fantasy

Fantasy, on the other hand, typically involves a form of magic and mythical creatures, rather than scientific or technological elements. Therefore, fans may be correct in arguing that superhero movies such as Superman and Wonder Woman evoke more fantasy than science fiction. These films focus on the characters’ superhuman powers and the use of mythical objects to defeat enemies, such as the use of Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir. Additionally, many superhero films feature popular figures from Norse mythology, such as Asgard, the Rainbow Bridge and Fenrir the wolf, suggesting the genre leans more towards fantasy than science fiction.

Mixed Genres

However, there is still a debate raging over whether superhero movies can be classed as both sci-fi and fantasy. Many modern superhero films feature a combination of both genres, blurring the boundaries between the two. Take The Avengers for example, the team defeats its villains using advanced technology such as J.A.R.V.I.S and the Helicarrier, as well as Thor’s lightning, making it both science-fiction and fantasy. Other franchises, such as the X-Men, feature fantasy elements such as Magneto’s manipulation of metals, as well as technology-based storylines. Arguably, then, these films do not belong to one single genre – they traverse both.
