In superhero movies, it is common knowledge that Loki is Thor’s adopted brother. Loki, in Norse mythology, was the god of mischief and lies, and thus he was naturally portrayed as a villain in the movies. But what about Loki’s actual biological brother?

In Norse mythology, Loki actually has two biological brothers. The first one is Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse that is exclusively owned by Odin. Loki had a hand in creating this horse from within his own body. The other brother of Loki is Fenrir, the giant wolf. In the movies, however, the brother of Loki who stands out the most is Hela, the goddess of death. Hela is actually Loki’s older sister in stories, and she is one of the main villains of the Thor movie franchise.

While Loki is constantly portrayed as a villain in the movies, Hela is often depicted as an even bigger threat. Hela is a powerful goddess who actually managed to destroy Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, and take over Asgard. This is significantly different from the traditional story in which Loki sides with the gods against the giants, and Hela is the one sent to the underworld to reign over the dead. This changed portrayal changes the dynamic between Loki and Hela, making them both powerful and threatening figures in the movies.

Hela is an interesting character in the sense that she is a female major villain in a male-dominated genre. She is a powerful, independent character who can stand on her own and take on an intimidatingly powerful role in the franchise, separating her from some of the more outdated female villains from the past.
