When it comes to horror movies, moths often symbolize fear and death. They’re typically portrayed as dark and creepy creatures that flutter around in the night, feeding on the terror of their human victims. In many cases, moths are associated with witches and other supernatural beings, making them all the more frightening. Given their spooky reputation, it’s no wonder that moths are often used to set the tone for a horror movie.

What do moths symbolize in movies?

The moth, though not a dangerous creature in itself, has often been associated with death – sometimes even as a messenger. This duality is reflected in cinema, where moths have been used to both foreshadow and represent death.

In The Possession, for example, moths surround a character who is about to die. Their presence is a sign of the character’s impending death, and their fluttering is a metaphor for the soul leaving the body. In Qala, a still from the film shows a moth crawling on a character’s face; this is a representation of death itself, as the moth is leeching the life out of the character.
