Japan has a long and storied history with horror films. Some of the earliest and most well-known Japanese horror films were released in the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as Toho’s 1968 classic “Kwaidan” and Nobuo Nakagawa’s 1960 film “Jigoku.” However, it was not until the late 1990s that American horror films began to make their way to Japan in a big way.

One of the first American horror films to find success in Japan was “The Blair Witch Project,” which was released in 1999. The found footage film about three student filmmakers who get lost in the woods while investigating a local legend proved to be popular with Japanese audiences, who were not familiar with the genre at the time.

Other American horror films that found success in Japan in the late 1990s and early 2000s include “The Ring” (2002), “The Grudge” (2004), and “Saw” (2004). These films all capitalized on the growing popularity of horror films in Japan, as well as the appeal of American films that were unfamiliar to Japanese audiences.
